Microsoft’s July 2026 news cycle is dominated by a major Xbox restructuring, a big Windows 11 feature update landing mid-month, continued AI-native transformation across developer tools (Visual Studio, VS Code, GitHub Copilot), and a critical SQL Server 2016 end-of-support deadline. Surface is mid-refresh with new Snapdragon X2 hardware, while Dynamics 365 continues its push toward agentic AI (“Cowork,” Sales/Service Agents). No major Azure Portal outages are currently reported — service status is operational.
Dynamics 365 (CRM & ERP)
- Dynamics 365 Sales and Service are rolling out agentic AI features across Microsoft 365 Copilot, including generally available Sales Agent and Service Agent capabilities and Cowork plugins to help teams work faster.
- Dynamics 365 is expanding workforce engagement management, letting service organizations plan and manage performance across both customer service reps and AI agents, alongside new email classification, sentiment analysis, and conversation orchestration features in Customer Service and Contact Center.
- Business Central shipped its July 2026 Cumulative Update (BC28 CU03) for the 2026 Release Wave 1 line, continuing the monthly patch cadence.
- Certification shift: the MB-240 Field Service consultant exam retired June 30, 2026, replaced by a new AB-250 Contact Center AI Engineer certification going GA in July.
Visual Studio / VS Code
- Visual Studio 2026 (GA since November 2025) continues positioning itself as the industry’s first “AI-native” IDE, with a June update adding a customizable Fluent theme-color editor and expanded Copilot Agent Skills browsing.
- VS Code 1.128 (released July 8) added multi-chat agent sessions, GA image/PDF support in Copilot Chat (“Copilot Vision”), browser tab placement controls, and OS-level keyboard shortcuts.
- TypeScript 7, announced July 8, brings native Go-based performance improvements.
Microsoft Windows
- Microsoft plans to begin the Windows 11 July 2026 Security Update on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, its biggest feature drop of the summer.
- Headline features: Point-in-Time Restore (automatic rollback recovery, requires 200GB free storage, on by default for Home/Pro), a calendar-based Windows Update pause control (up to 35 days), a new Screen Tint accessibility overlay, Magnifier zoom-percentage entry, Bluetooth reliability fixes, and faster File Explorer launches.
- Insiders are also testing “Cloud rebuild,” a new recovery option that restores a PC to a clean state via full OS reinstall directly from Windows Update, even when the device won’t boot.
- July 2026 update also completes the final Kerberos RC4 hardening phase on domain controllers and defaults new printer installs to Windows Ready Print (IPP).
Azure Portal
- No active widespread outage as of this writing — Azure status is reported operational.
- Ongoing enterprise focus: Windows 365 for Agents is now GA within Agent 365, letting Cloud PCs run autonomous multi-step agent workflows across apps.
- Broader Microsoft 365 commercial pricing/packaging changes took effect July 1, 2026, layering new Defender, Intune, and Copilot Chat capabilities into E3/E5 suites.
SQL Server
- Critical deadline: SQL Server 2016 reaches end of extended support on July 14, 2026 — after this date it receives no further security patches. New encryption defaults in the SQL Server 2025 OLE DB driver (MSOLEDBSQL 19) will also break linked servers, replication, and full-text search for organizations upgrading without updated certificates.
- Extended Security Updates (ESU) are available via Azure Arc or Volume Licensing through 2029, but cover critical security fixes only.
- Note: this is a separate deadline from Windows Server 2016, whose OS support runs to January 2027 — organizations running both need two migration tracks.
GitHub Copilot
- GPT-5.6 (Sol, Terra, Luna) from OpenAI rolled into Copilot across IDE, CLI, mobile, and cloud-agent surfaces (July 9), joining Kimi K2.7 Code, now GA as the first open-weight model in the Copilot model picker.
- The standalone GitHub Copilot desktop app is now available on every plan tier (Free through Enterprise) across macOS, Windows, and Linux, including bring-your-own-key support.
- Usage metrics API improved (July 2) to fix under-reported AI credit and CLI telemetry — enterprises should expect historical usage comparisons to shift.
- Upcoming: Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash will be deprecated across Copilot on July 31, 2026.
Xbox
- Major restructuring: Xbox plans to eliminate 3,200 jobs, around 20% of its staff, over the next year, as part of a reorganization to spur growth in the struggling gaming division. CEO Asha Sharma told staff the business is “not healthy,” citing margins three to 10 times lower than comparable businesses.
- Compulsion Games and Double Fine are becoming independent studios; Undead Labs and Ninja Theory are being sold; Xbox is also beginning a process to divest Arkane Studios. B
- On the content side, Halo: Campaign Evolved launches July 28 (early access July 23), and Game Pass is adding Palworld 1.0, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, and Gears of War: Reloaded this month.
Surface
- New Surface Pro (13-inch) and Surface Laptop (13.8″/15″) with Snapdragon X2 chips launched for consumers June 16; Surface for Business versions of the same hardware arrive July 14.
- Specs: up to 53–58% faster graphics performance, up to 15.5–20 hours battery life, an 80 TOPS NPU, and optional OLED displays.
- Later in 2026, Microsoft will ship a Surface Laptop Ultra powered by Nvidia’s ARM-based RTX Spark chip, plus a matching Surface RTX Spark Dev Box workstation for local AI development.
- Analysts note the device business remains under pressure — Windows OEM/Devices revenue is soft, and pricing on new Surface hardware has risen $500–600 over prior generations.
