Microsoft is accelerating the convergence of agents, apps, and automation across the Power Platform and Microsoft 365. Key developments include native natural-language app creation rolling out in Copilot Studio and Copilot Cowork, the addition of xAI’s Grok as a selectable model in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint via the Frontier program, general availability of federated MCP connectors, ongoing delivery of 2026 release wave 1 capabilities in Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Pages, and Dataverse, plus September enhancements to Copilot in SharePoint and the shift of future roadmap disclosures to the AI at Work portal.
- Native app-building capabilities are now available in public preview inside Copilot Studio and via the /app skill in Copilot Cowork, letting makers describe business outcomes in natural language and generate governed enterprise apps connected to Microsoft 365 data and connectors.
- xAI’s Grok models became selectable inside Microsoft 365 Copilot (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) through the Microsoft Frontier Program on September 12.
- Federated Copilot connectors using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) reached general availability, making external tools and data first-class citizens in M365 Copilot.
- Power Platform 2026 release wave 1 (April–September 2026) continues delivering AI agent authoring and self-healing for Power Automate desktop flows, modernized UI and generative pages for Power Apps, enhanced security agents for Power Pages, and stronger governance controls.
- Release plans for Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Dataverse will no longer be published in the traditional format starting this month; new capabilities move to the always-on AI at Work roadmap.
- September 2026 Copilot in SharePoint updates add personal skills that travel across sites and OneDrive, evaluation tools to improve those skills, and tenant-specific HTML guidance for building SharePoint-safe pages and reports with AI assistants.
- SharePoint Framework (SPFx) 1.24 and SharePoint Copilot Components/Apps remain on track for broader availability later in autumn after public preview.
- Power Automate gains deeper Copilot Studio actions in cloud flows and improved process-mining capabilities as part of the current wave.
