Today the Iran war’s spillover widened. Yemeni government forces, helped by Saudi-led coalition jets, pushed Houthi rebels out of several towns near the Red Sea. Turkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia agreed to activate their Mecca defence pact and rapidly deploy forces to the kingdom. Tanker attacks around Hormuz have hit a wartime high. Even so, Brent fell back to just under $100 and the Nasdaq closed at a record on Monday. In France, more than 250,000 people rallied against school underfunding, and police used tear gas. Moscow’s mayor said Ukraine launched more than 650 drones. The IMF’s October outlook chapters are due. My forecast for tomorrow (October 7): expect more Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab incidents, with the first Mecca-pact deployments arriving in Saudi Arabia. Expect Russian retaliation for the Moscow strike. Expect more French student clashes, and heightened security around the October 7 anniversary of the 2023 Hamas attack. Oil likely stays in a roughly $97–105 band, and the main upside risk is a Houthi or Iranian hit on Saudi infrastructure. Brazil’s October 25 runoff campaign should intensify. These are my estimates, not reported facts.
Global Government and Politics
- Europe: Almost 2,000 French schools were blockaded or closed over understaffing, overcrowding and dilapidated buildings, and roughly 6,000 people have been arrested since the protests began. Nearly 500 more were detained Tuesday, adding pressure on outgoing President Macron. Spain’s Sánchez called a snap election as the housing crisis bites. Italy’s electoral reform cleared its first confidence vote.
- Americas: Brazil’s presidential runoff is set for October 25. Reports say the right enters the runoff with momentum. I could not verify the official first-round percentages. US midterms are November 3, and the weak jobs report is feeding the campaign debate. Canada’s Carney is making the first bilateral visit to Turkey by a Canadian PM.
- Asia: China plans a late entry into the WHO leadership race, according to sources.
- Middle East: Iran-US talks remain deadlocked, and Trump has demanded Iran surrender.
Global Economy
- World: The IMF’s July update put 2026 growth at 3.0% and inflation at 4.7%, driven by energy and food prices. The full October outlook comes October 13 in Bangkok.
- North America: The Fed’s next move is a hold or a hike, not a cut, and September CPI lands October 14. The funds rate is 3.75–4%.
- Europe: Eurozone inflation was 3.3% in August, with core at 2.4%.
- Middle East and North Africa: The IMF’s April outlook cut regional growth by nearly three percentage points. un
- Markets: Stocks firmed and borrowing-cost worries eased as oil retreated.
Global Birth Rate (annual estimates, not daily news; approximate, from UN-style figures)
- World: about 16–17 births per 1,000 people, with fertility around 2.2 children per woman.
- Sub-Saharan Africa: highest, roughly 4+ children per woman.
- South Asia and Latin America: near or below replacement.
- Europe, East Asia and North America: about 1.1–1.6 children per woman.
Global Death Rate (approximate)
- World: about 7.5–8 per 1,000.
- Europe and Japan: highest (about 11–12 per 1,000) because of ageing.
- Africa: moderate, about 8–9, with a young population but higher mortality risk.
- Middle East and Latin America: among the lowest.
- Today’s health watch: Russia’s health watchdog says no plague cases were found among contacts of the institute employee who died.
Global Population Growth Rate (approximate)
- World: about 0.8–0.9% a year, on roughly 8.2–8.3 billion people.
- Sub-Saharan Africa: about 2.4–2.5%, the fastest.
- Asia: slowing, with China and Japan shrinking.
- Europe: flat to negative.
- Americas: about 0.5–0.8%.
Global Population Sex Ratio (approximate)
- World: about 101–102 males per 100 females overall, and about 105 boys per 100 girls at birth.
- Asia, especially South and East: male-skewed.
- Gulf states: very male-skewed because of migrant labour.
- Europe and the former USSR: women outnumber men.
Global School Life Expectancy, Primary to Tertiary (approximate)
- World: about 12–13 years.
- Europe and North America: about 15–17.
- East Asia and Latin America: about 13–15.
- South Asia: about 11–12.
- Sub-Saharan Africa: about 9–10, the lowest.
- Today’s school news: France’s student protests are over school funding. They are not about life expectancy, but they show the strain.
Global Unemployment Rate
- World: roughly 5% by ILO-style estimates (approximate).
- United States: 4.2% in September, with payrolls up just 29,000.
- Eurozone and EU: 6.4% and 6.1% in August. In July, Finland was highest at 10.5% and Spain was at 10%.
- Youth: about 15% across the EU and euro area.
Global Energy
- Oil: Brent is around $100 and WTI around $89.60, with the Brent–WTI spread above $11. The G7 pledged a 100-million-barrel emergency release, and Middle East exports topped pre-war levels in September. Saudi Aramco cut its November Asian price discount deeper. Brent quotes vary from about $99.9 to $100.8, depending on the source and time.
- Middle East: Houthis targeted Riyadh airport and an Aramco refinery.
- Russia: Fires broke out at a Moscow oil refinery in an earlier Ukrainian attack.
Global Communications
- Space and satellites: Experts are worried about space weapons that some nations have already deployed.
- Gulf: Electronic warfare in the region has included AIS (ship-tracking) jamming.
- Information risk: Contested claims about Yemen’s front lines (the Houthis deny losing ground) show how unreliable war reporting is.
Global Transportation
- Shipping: Four tanker attacks were confirmed on October 2–3 in Hormuz. Some Gulf round trips reportedly cost charterers up to $40 million.
- Aviation: A Houthi body warned airlines that Saudi airspace “would not be safe.” Netanyahu ordered a security review for foreign airlines after the Flydubai attack.
- Asia: US forces in Okinawa paused all operations for two days after a Marine’s arrest in a killing.
Global Military and Security
- Middle East: The coalition says 100 fighter jets are supporting Yemeni forces. The US pulled all B-1 bombers from a UK base after a terror plot was uncovered. Iran says Hormuz stays closed until its conditions are met.

- Gaza: Israeli airstrikes killed at least two people today.
- Asia: Myanmar airstrikes on displacement camps in Rakhine killed eight over two days.
Global Terrorism
- Flydubai FZ1073 (September 30): A co-pilot stabbed the captain, and Israeli passengers subdued him. Israeli officials called it an attempted terror attack and indicated it was a lone-wolf act with no evidence of a foreign link. Authorities in the UAE, Israel and Oman are examining the security failures.
- UK: A planned attack was discovered near the base where US bombers were stationed.
- Watch: the October 7 anniversary raises Israeli and Gulf alert levels (my assessment).
Global Transnational Issues and Conflicts
- Iran war and Gulf: The Houthis are fighting to hold the Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint.
- Health: The US and international health officials are monitoring the unexplained death at a Siberian plague research institute.
- Migration: Malaysia says 10,000 Myanmar nationals have been sent back since January.
- Climate and law: The US Supreme Court heard a case on holding energy companies liable for climate change.
