With a population of 7.53 million, world‑leading life expectancy, and a service‑dominated economic structure, it continues to serve as a major financial and logistics hub in Asia. Its governance under the Basic Law ensures autonomy in key areas, while its strategic location and infrastructure support its role as a bridge between China and the world. Looking toward 2026, Hong Kong is expected to deepen regional integration, enhance financial leadership, and sustain its position as a premier international city.

Introduction

Hong Kong in 2025 is a highly developed, service‑driven global hub with 7.53 million residents, a world‑class financial system, and a unique constitutional status under “One Country, Two Systems.” It remains one of the world’s freest economies and a major gateway between Mainland China and international markets.

Geography

Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories, and over 200 outlying islands, with a compact land area and subtropical climate. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta supports its role as a regional logistics and business hub.

People and Society

The population is cosmopolitan, with Chinese and English as official languages. Residents enjoy one of the longest life expectancies in the world—88.2 years for females and 82.7 for males (2024 figures). Hong Kong maintains strong cultural diversity, a vibrant events calendar, and a blend of Eastern and Western lifestyles.

Government

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China, exercising a high degree of autonomy in accordance with the Basic Law. It maintains independent executive, legislative, and judicial powers, its own immigration and customs systems, and participates separately in international economic organizations such as the WTO and APEC.

Population

Mid‑2025 population: 7.53 million (provisional). Population density remains among the highest globally, with ongoing demographic aging and low natural growth.

Economy

Hong Kong remains a service‑oriented economy, with services contributing over 90% of GDP. It ranks as the world’s freest economy (Fraser Institute 2025) and continues to be a leading global center for IPO fundraising, offshore Renminbi liquidity, hedge funds, and private equity. Free capital flow, low taxes, and a level playing field underpin its competitiveness.

Energy

Electricity and gas consumption remain stable, supported by modern infrastructure. Energy statistics in 2025 show consistent demand across residential and commercial sectors, reflecting Hong Kong’s dense urban environment and service‑heavy economy.

Communications

Hong Kong maintains free flow of information, high‑speed telecommunications, and robust digital infrastructure. Freedom of expression and press freedom are guaranteed under the Basic Law, with widespread broadband and mobile penetration.

Transportation

The city is known for its world‑class transportation system, including the MTR rail network, extensive bus and ferry services, and one of the world’s busiest airports. Its infrastructure supports efficient movement of people and goods across the region.

Military and Security

Defense is the responsibility of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Garrison. Hong Kong maintains its own police, customs, and anti‑corruption agencies, operating separately from Mainland systems under “One Country, Two Systems.”
